Leila Holmes- London Balloon Company

Leila Holmes: From Circus Performer to Balloon Artist Extraordinaire

Leila Holmes, founder of London Balloon Company, has had an extraordinary creative journey, transitioning from circus performer to award-nominated balloon artist. Her diverse experiences have shaped an exciting and fulfilling career.

From Circus Performer to Event Decorator

Holmes began in the arts as a co-founder and performer in a touring circus, where she spent six years performing, creating costumes, and managing production. “I’ve always been artistic,” she says. After leaving the circus, she moved into event decoration, working as a set dresser for 15 years. “I loved being on-site,” she recalls. Her hands-on problem-solving skills later proved invaluable in balloon design.

Discovering a Passion for Balloons

In 2009, Holmes was hired for a stilt-walking job requiring balloon twisting. “I’d never made a balloon in my life, but I felt confident I could deliver,” she shares. She quickly fell in love with balloon artistry and began offering twisting at corporate events and parties. By 2017, she secured her first major balloon decor job for Instagram’s Paris Expo stand, solidifying her confidence in large-scale balloon decor.

Expanding Skills and Achievements

Following her early success, Holmes pursued formal training with Qualatex Pioneer and participated in major industry events, including the Big Balloon Builds. She is now part of a decor management team for high-profile projects like the Blackpool Balloon Bash. Her dedication led to her being shortlisted in three categories and reaching the finals in two for the 2024 Balloon Artist Awards. “It’s so gratifying to be recognised for my creativity,” she says.

Large-Scale Installations and Celebrity Clients

Holmes thrives on large balloon installations. “The bigger, the better,” she says, citing her largest project for Instagram’s Paris Expo. “Being on-site and seeing the vision come together is the best feeling.” She has worked with BBC, ITV, Travelodge, Stormzy, and Maya Jama. Her recent work appeared on ITV’s Pride of Britain Awards, where she created decor for a charity award recipient’s celebration.

Future Ambitions and Advice for Aspiring Artists

Holmes aims to expand into international projects and collaborate on large builds with groups like Globos Payaso. She advises aspiring artists to seek quality training and price their work confidently. “It’s tempting to lower your prices when starting, but knowing your value is crucial.”

From circus performer to balloon artist extraordinaire, Leila Holmes continues to push creative boundaries, proving that passion and experience can lead to an extraordinary career.
